Method of measurement of food radioactive substances

On August 24, Japan opened the discharge of wastewater contaminated by the Fukushima nuclear accident into the Pacific Ocean. Currently, based on the public data of TEPCO in June 2023, the sewage prepared to discharge mainly contains: the activity of H-3 is about 1.4 x10⁵Bq / L; the activity of C-14 is 14 Bq / L; I-129 is 2 Bq / L; the activity of Co-60, Sr-90, Y-90, Tc-99, Sb-125, Te-125m and Cs-137 is 0.1-1 Bq / L. In this regard, we focus not only on the tritium in nuclear waste water, but also on the potential risks of other radionuclides. TepCO only disclosed the total α and total β radioactive activity data of contaminated water, and did not disclose the concentration data of extremely toxic ultra-uranium nuclides such as Np-237, Pu-239, Pu-240, Am-240, Am-241, Am-243 and Cm-242, which is also one of the key safety risks for the discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the sea.

In order to reduce or avoid the harm of radiation exposure to the public and protect public health to the maximum extent, the "International Basic Safety Standards for Radiation Protection and Radiation Source Safety" stipulates that the competent authorities formulate the reference level for radionuclides in food.
